The Government’s Role in Wildfire Prevention: Are They Doing Enough?

Each year, wildfires burn hotter, arrive earlier, and leave behind more damage. Emergency response budgets keep rising. But one question keeps coming up:

Why isn’t more being done before the fires start?

At The Patriot Group, we’ve spent years working alongside federal, state, and local agencies in the field. We’ve seen what’s working and where critical gaps remain. The biggest challenge isn’t always funding. More often, it comes down to coordination, execution, and follow-through.

Where Progress Is Happening

Some agencies are taking real steps in the right direction. In recent years, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service, and the California Fire Safe Council have:

  • Increased funding for fuel reduction
  • Launched grants that support rural fire resilience
  • Partnered with private contractors to expand capacity
  • Focused on public education and defensible space outreach

These moves matter. But progress has been uneven and not fast enough to meet the urgency of the threat.

Where the System Falls Short

1. Delays in Starting the Work Many mitigation contracts are awarded too late in the season. By the time crews mobilize, the window to prepare has already closed.

2. No Unified Year-Round Strategy Different agencies often work in isolation, each operating on their own timelines, priorities, and mandates. Without a shared, coordinated plan that spans the entire year, critical gaps are left unaddressed.

3. Limited Funding for Ongoing Mitigation Even when the intention is there, funding is often tied to seasonal budgets or emergency declarations. That makes it difficult to maintain steady progress during off-peak months—when proactive work is most effective.

4. Overlooking the Right Partners Smaller, certified contractors—especially those with boots-on-the-ground experience—are often passed over in favor of larger firms that take longer to mobilize and execute.

What We’re Doing to Help

At The Patriot Group, we believe wildfire prevention is not just a government responsibility. It’s a shared effort between agencies, communities, and trusted partners.

Here’s how we contribute:

  • Clearing vegetation and debris before it becomes fuel
  • Supplying trained, deployable field crews all year long
  • Managing logistics to get the right labor, equipment, and materials on site when they’re needed
  • Advocating for the inclusion of certified small businesses with real field experience

As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), a DVBE, and a proud member of the California Fire Safe Council, we know how to operate in complex environments—and we’re ready to move when needed.

Is the Government Doing Enough?

Not yet. But the path forward is clear.

This isn’t just about spending more money. It’s about spending it smarter. That means working with partners who are field-ready, proactive, and built to move.

If your agency or organization is ready to strengthen its approach to fire prevention, we’re here to help.
